Abstract

492,891. Stapling. QUICK. C. G., and FOWLES, R. W. Feb. 26, 1937, No. 5849. [Class 89 (iii)] A rotary web-stapling mechanism designed for inserting a line of staples longitudinally of the web feed comprises staple-forming, stapledriving, and clenching cylinders 1, 2, 3 and a wire-feeding mechanism M. The cylinder 1 comprises two plungers 7, 8 which are projected in turn, at an appropriate time, beyond the periphery of the cylinder, by levers 11, 12 connected by a link 17 and operated by a cam projection 24 and a recess 25 in a fixed ring 22. When so projected, each plunger co-operates with a recess 28 or 29 in the cylinder 2 to bend into staple form a length of wire 38 which has been fed between the cylinders. The formed staple is carried round by the cylinder 2 until it registers with one of two clenching blocks 45 provided'in the cylinder 3. At this point, while the staple, the webs W to be stapled, and the block 45 are, relatively, at rest, the staple is driven through the webs by a plunger 26 or 27 movable in the recesses 28, 29 and operated by cam linkage similar to that for the plungers 7, 8. This cam operation is such as to produce a very rapid projection and retraction of the plungers. The wire-feeding mechanism comprises a ratchet and pawl 30<1>, 32 operated by a crank disc 35, and staple lengths are severed by a cutter 42, Fig. 4, which is carried by a pivoted arm 40 and is operated by tappets 44 adjustable on the cylinder 1. The cam rings 22 are adjustable for varying the timing of the operations, and the operating shafts of the cylinders 1, 2 are carried in a bracket 52 which is angularly adjustable for varying the spacing of the cylinders 2 and 3. The recesses 28, 29 and the plungers 7, 8 are grooved at 49-51 to facilitate the shaping of the staples. Preferably, the cylinder 3 is arranged to constitute the usual roller at the head of a web-folding mechanism, not shown.
