Abstract

278,952. Rigby, F. J. March 10, 1927. Machines using continuous wire. - A working head for a stapling machine comprises a base 34 having at its end a fixed throat 35 with wire-ways 37 and a movable die block 38 held against the throat by a spring and also formed with wire-ways 37. The abutting ends of the throat 35 and block 38 are grooved to form a wire bore 39 into which a staple length of wire is fed. A staple driver 41 pivoted at its rear end to an operating slide 42 has a heel portion normally lying in the throat and die block, and carries a roll 47 moving in a. cam track 48 in a raised portion of the base 34. When a staple blank has been fed into the bore 39 the driver is raised, dragging the blank into the block 38 and shaping the staple, the block meanwhile rising against the pressure if its spring and of a spring plunger 50. When the roll 47 enters the curved portion of the slot 48 the heel portion of the driver is disengaged from the die block, and the latter descends with the formed staple. Upon descent of the driver the heel portion is again positioned behind the block 38 ready for driving the staple. A machine embodying the working head H, Fig. 7, comprises a wire spool S, feed rolls 1, 2, and a cutting device C operated intermittently by a ratchet wheel and toothed quadrant. A rock shaft 6 driven from the main driving shaft carries a lever 17 which operates the driver through a link 11, and a lever 18 which drives the feed roll 2 through a rack 21. Specification 278,951 is referred to.
