Abstract

413,212. Stapling; making staples. ROSENMUND, A. L., 100, Rockaway Avenue, Rockaway, IGLEHEART, G. P., 424, Rockaway Avenue, Boonton, and STAPLING MACHINES CO., Pine Street, Rockaway, all in New Jersey, U.S.A. Dec. 30, 1933, No. 36720. [Class 89 (iii).] A machine adapted to make staples from continuous wire stock, with or without means for driving the formed staples into a workpiece, is characterized in that the wire stock is fed continuously to the forming devices. As shown, the wire stock 2 is fed by continuouslydriven rolls 19, 20 to a flexible and resilient guide tube 31 which leads it across a stationary cutter 33 with a chamfered cutting edge 34, and finally above a bending anvil 35. A length of wire is cut off and bent over the anvil by a former 36 which has a chamfered cutting edge 37. While the former 36 is in bending position, the advancing wire stock is deflected by a surface 60 on the former, Fig. 11, and passes in front of the former, the tube 31 bending to allow this. When the former rises again above the anvil, the tube 31 springs back to normal position, carrying the next staple length into position above the anvil. The front cover plate 61 of the mechanism has a groove 62 with a curved end 63 to assist in guiding the wire, and a plate 64 above the wire prevents the latter being carried up frictionally as the former 36 rises. The rolls 19, 20 are driven by a chain 27 from a main shaft 14, Fig. 1. The stapling head comprises a casing 15 adjustable on a stationary bar 9 and carrying the wire feed mechanism and the anvil 35, and a casing 16 adjustable on a vertically-reciprocating bar 10 and carrying the actuating means for the former 36 and a driver 56. The former 36 comprises a bending slot 39 and wire-receiving grooves 38, 40, and is reciprocated positively, to shape the staple, by a dog 41, Fig. 3, pivoted to the casing 16. The dog is disengaged from the former by cam surfaces 45 before it reaches the workpiece, and is then lowered yieldingly by a spring-pressed rod 47. The driver 56, which operates through the slot 39, is carried directly from the casing 16. After the staple-bending and driving operations, the former is raised first by the dog 41 engaging a shoulder 58 on the former, and then by the driver after cam surfaces 59 have disengaged the dog from the shoulder. The anvil 35 is carried by a member 50 pivoted in the casing 15, and is disengaged from the staple, after shaping is completed, by a cam surface 55 on the driver. The machine includes a fixed or movable work table 8, and may comprise several stapling heads with associated wire reels 3, the latter being hung from a bar 5 by brackets 4. Specification 220,605, [Class 89 (iii)], is referred to.
