[Class 89 (iii)] Staples are cut and formed from a flat metal strip by a central and two lateral knives of which the latter 3, 4 first cut and bend the edges of the strip and the former 5 then cuts the central portion of the strip and drives the staple. The knives 3, 4 are driven from the knife 5 by the engagement with their upper ends of rolls 8, 9 retained in recesses 10, 11 in the knife 5 by guides 7. Recesses 12,13 in the guides receive the rolls to permit further movement of the knife 5 after the knives 3, 4 complete their stroke. The knives 3, 4 are raised again by projections 16 engaging the upper walls of recesses 17. The cutting edges of the knives 3, 4 are inclined and of the knife 5 concave. One lateral knife may move in advance of the other. The staple may be held in position between the guides 7 and the anvil by magnetic means, recessing of the knives or by a spring. The metal strip 2 is fed perpendicularly or obliquely to the knives by a spring-pressed pivoted strop 20 carrying a spring-pressed pivoted catch 22. The strop is operated by a sliding rod 19 which together with the knives is operated from a hand- or pedaloperated lever.
