525,649. Stapling. HAZEWINKEL, R. C. Feb..24, 1939, No. 6203. Convention date, Feb. 28, 1938. [Class 89 (iii)] In a stapling tool which is operable by one hand for bending staples to U-form from a flat strip and then driving them into the work, pressure upon a handle first moves a bending die and stresses a driving spring, and then releases the spring so that the latter imparts a driving stroke to the driver. The tool comprises a casing 1 for a roll of flat, strip-connected staples 36, a housing 2, and a plunger 10 formed with a handle 11 and raised by a spring 14. The bending die 15, which is adapted to bend the staple over an anvil 28, is fixed to the plunger 10 and makes frictional contact with the driver 17 which is slidable in the plunger. Also slidable in the plunger is a hammer 12 under pressure of a spring 13. When the plunger 10 is forced down, the die 15 bends a staple and a pawl 5 holds the hammer 12 from movement, so that the spring 13 is stressed. Ultimately, an edge 23 on the plunger releases the pawl, so that the hammer 12 is forced down against the driver. The staple strip is fed by a pawl 7 having lugs 34 which engage the staple legs after bending. The die 15 is thicker than the driver 17, so that three staples are bent at each descent of the die. The housing 2 has a removable cover 3.
