Abstract

256,636. Boston Wire Stitcher Co., (Assignees of Maynard, A. H.). Aug. 7, 1925, [Convention date]. Nailing and stapling, hand tools for.-Relates to stapling machines or tackers of the kind having a base upon which the machine can stand, a handle surmounting the base by which the machine can be transported and by which it can be steadied during operation, a vertically slidable driver for the staples or other fastenings and a, housing in which the driver slides, and consists in forming the base, handle and housing from a single piece of sheet metal. The appliance has a hollow handle 7 which may be used as a magazine for containing a reserve supply of fasteners, or for holding tools. The appliance is constructed almost entirely of sheet-metal stamped out and struck up in dies, and can be taken to pieces without the use of tools. The appliance comprises a flat base 3 which slides over the work as desired. The base, upstanding arms 5, 6, handle 7 and rectangular plunger guide 9 are all shaped from a single blank of sheet metal. The rectangular plunger 10 is similarly formed from a blank, and has its upper sides split at the corners and bent over to support a dome 16 tq be engaged by the hand of the operator. The descent of the plunger is limited by a latch 20 normally urged, by a spring 22, through a slot in the guide 9 to a slot in the plunger. The appliance shown is constructed for driving staples, a supply of these straddling a core 35. The staples s are retained on the core by a channel member 40, and are fed along the core by a pusher 73 backed by a spring 75. The foremost staple is clear of the core and abuts against a gate 50 pivoted at 45 and held in normal position by a spring 60 riveted to a screw 61 engaging a threaded hole in the casing 9. On the operator depressing the plunger 16, a driver 25 descends to drive the foremost staple into the work. The driver 25 is provided with a central hole engaging a projection on the casing 9, and is reversible. The core 35 has a reduced end 36 engaging a hole in the frame and retained therein by the pivot 45, which passes through holes in upstanding ears integral with the member 40. This pivot has peripheral grooves 59 normally engaged by the down turned edges of a plate 31 against which the lower end of the plunger-return-spring 30 bears. On raising the plate 31 the pivot 45 can be removed. The rear end of the hollow handle is closed by a gate 66 pivoted on the member 36. A finger piece 72 is provided, for retracting the pusher 73 when the core 35 is to be re-charged ; and a notch is formed on the core into which the forward edge of the pusher 73 snaps when fully retracted.
