Abstract
274,191. Gimson Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd., and Bagshaw, C. M. April 15, 1926. Machines using continuous wire.-A staple-forming mechanism, for example for use on the machine described in Specification 14453/97, of the type in which a severed piece of wire is bent to staple form by a fixed inner and a moving outer former, is arranged to produce a staple from bevel-pointed wire with its legs converging. As shown, wire 15 of rectangular cross - section is fed by rolls 12, 13 and a guide 17 to angular cutting edges 22 on a plate 19. A movable cutter 24 with similar cutting edges is advanced to sever a length of wire which is bevelled at both ends by the angular cutters. At a level with the wire guide is a fixed inside former 26 the sides of which converge, as shown in Fig. 2, for a short distance below its upper edge. Cooperating with this former is an outside former 28 carried by a slide 46 depressed by a camlever 44 and raised by a spring-plunger 48. The former 28 is slotted for most of its length to form two limbs possessing a certain amount of resilience. These limbs have extensions 30 which retain the staple wire on the fixed former as it is pushed forward bv the cutter 24. As the former 28 descends, it first bends the wire to form parallel legs on the staple. As it descends further, cam surfaces 40 on the limbs engage fixed cam surfaces 34 to press the limbs together and bend the staple legs into the converging part of the fixed anvil 26. As the former rises, the staple is retained on the anvil by a spring stripper 50. The cutter 24 is finally given a further forward movement to push the staple from the anvil on to an inclined plate 56, preferably integral with the anvil, which may be vibrated if desired. This plate leads to a gate 55 which is moved in timed relation to the motion of a wiper nose 58 of the machine abovementioned to allow the staple to pass to the staple pocket 60. The cutters 22, 24 may be set up or down to vary the length of the staple by a rod 72, cam 76 and lever 80.
