Abstract

411,830. Stapling. RHODES, J. W., and BINCH, A. H., c/o Rhodes, Ltd., Lotus Street, Nottingham. Nov. 12, 1932, No. 31994. [Class 89 (iii).] A machine, particularly for connecting the end coils of adjacent springs of a pocketed spring mattress, is arranged to cut successive pieces from a length of stock, and to bend them substantially to diamond form to embrace said coils. Wire 21 is fed across a saddle 13 beneath two formers 10, 11 which are, respectively, pivoted and fixed to a cross-head 12. When the cross-head descends, the former 11 cuts off a length of wire in co-operation with a guide 22, and both formers bend the wire to U-form about the saddle, Fig. 4. Upon continued descent of the cross-head, the saddle is withdrawn, the U-shaped clip is carried down to embrace the coils of the springs positioned beneath it, and the former 10 is swung about its pivot by an adjustable stop 36, when permitted by a recess 37 in the former, to bend the clip 24 to diamond form, Fig. 6. It then locks the spring coils 22<a>, 22b, with or without penetration of the fabric 23 forming the pockets. The cross-head is forced down, against springs 17, by a cam 18 on a shaft 42 driven by reduction gearing from a pulley shaft 41. The wire is fed by a slide 26 and a dog 28 pivoted to it. When the dog is rocked by a lever 32, it first grips the wire and then carries it forward. On its return movement it releases the wire, a spring-pressed dog 30 preventing retrograde movement of the wire. The extent of the feed movement of the slide 26 is determined by an adjustable stop 38. The wire-feed lever 32 is operated from a cam 43 on the shaft 42 through linkage 52, 51, 50 Fig. 8, and a rock-shaft 47 and cam follower 48. A third cam 46 on the shaft 41 reciprocates the saddle 13 through linkage 55, 56, 58 and a gear segment 59 and rack 61. The frame 16 carrying the stapling mechanism is suspended by posts 64 above a table, not shown, on which the mattress is positioned. In making up a pocketed mattress, a chain of open-ended pockets is formed in a strip of fabric, a compressed spring is inserted into each pocket, the ends of the pockets are closed by sewing, each spring is turned through an angle of 90‹, a plurality of such chains are assembled side by side, and the end coils of adjacent springs are connected by clips, Fig. 10, as described.
