Abstract

Class 89(3) A portable power-operated stapling-machine is of, pistol-like-form with a barrel 1, Fig. 1, containing an ejector for driving staples from a guideway 2 fed by a magazine 4, and a handle 3 located approximately at the centre-of-gravity of the machine and containing a trigger-controlledclutch for transmitting a drive from an electric-motor, situated externally of the machine, to said ejectormechanism. The motor is connected to the handle through a flexibledrive 13 coupled to a shaft 14 carrying a worm 17 driving a wormwheel 18. The wormwheel is connectible by the clutch to a peg 19 engaging a block 20 having a tongue 20a sliding in a slot 21 in a lever 22 pivoted in the handle at 23. The upper-end of the lever carries a pawl 11 which, as the lever turns to the right, engages a part 6a and moves a block 6 against a spring 8 until the pawl is tripped from said part by a fixed-roller 12. The block is then returned by the spring to drive a staple. The wormwheel is secured on a sleeve 32, Fig. 6, having notches 32a and a hole containing a pin 33 recessed at 33a to allow the sleeve to rotate on a hub 26 until the pin is turned to engage, with one edge, one of the notches 32a. The pin is urged to the latter-position by a spring 35. Fig. 5. engaging an arm 34, and is held in the former-position by a rod 37 movable against a spring 38 by a trigger 39a and lever 40. A rotatable-cam 41 is positionable so that. when the trigger is pressed, either the lever 40 is moved off rod 37 after initiating a single-stroke of block 6, or the block reciprocates, driving one staple after another until the trigger is released.
