Abstract

780,261. Stapling. ASHWELL, N. W. July 15, 1955 [July 20, 1954], No. 21063/54. Class 89(3) A stapling tool consists of a base 10, Fig. 1, to which is pivoted, a driving arm 54 supporting a driving blade 35, a magazine 22 of open-topped form, and a magazine cover 46 detachably connected to the arm 54 by a screw 57. A leaf spring 58 between the arm 54 and the cover 46, and a spring loaded plunger 60 between the magazine 22 and the base 10 return these members into positions spaced from each other, after each driving operation. The cover 46 is retained in operative position over the magazine 22 by a slidably releasable latch 51 on the cover which engages under lugs 50 on fingers 49 extending upwardly from the magazine 22. Within the magazine 22, which is formed by an upwardly open channel, a core member 23, Fig. 3, also of upwardly open channel form, defines a passage 28 for the legs of the staples 30. A rod 40 passing axially through the core member carries a compression spring 44 which acts upon a staple feeding plunger 31 guided by apertured lugs 43 upon the rod 40. The side walls of the magazine adjacent the front edge are provided with inwardly inclined portions 38, Fig. 5, which retain the staples in position on the core member 23. The driving plunger 35 has a central rib 34 which co-operates with an opening formed in the front end of the magazine. A rotatable anvil 16 carried by the base 10 can be selectively engaged in either one of two positions spaced 180 degrees from each other in which surfaces on the anvil co-operate with the legs of the staple to turn them either inwardly or outwardly. The magazine 22, cover 46 and driver 54 can be pivoted to a position in which they project rearwardly of the base so that the tool can be used for driving staples into a surface, such as a notice board.
