Abstract
517,352. Stapling. PANKONIN, W. G. July 25, 1938, No. 22069: [Class 89 (iii)] Relates to stapling tools of the kind comprising a magazine arm 2 hinged to a base 1 with a clenching anvil, and consists in improvements in the clenching devices, in means for holding the arm spaced from the base, in the staple-pusher mechanism, and in the head casing for the driver plunger and full-stroke mechanism. The arm 2 is hinged to the base by means of brackets 7, and is held away from the base by a bent lever 5 hinged to the base at 10 and stressed by a spring 14. The anvil comprises a fixed part 16 which is secured to the base by rivets 77 and has a clenching groove 76, and two movable members 19 which are hinged to the fixed part at 79, Fig. 3, and have grooves in line with the groove 76 and flat surfaces 80 which normally lie parallel to, but above, the upper surface of the part 16. The members 19 are held in this position by arms 18 which rest on the horizontal surface of a slide 22, Fig. 5, which has a bevelled forward edge 82. In using the tool, work to be stapled rests on the surfaces 80. When the plunger 56 is depressed to cause the driver 57. to drive a staple, a cam 90 adjustably mounted. on the plunger engages after the staple has penetrated the work, with a lever 89 so as to rock a rod 88 which is effective, through an arm 86 and a lever 6, to withdraw the slide 22 rearwardly. Then, the members 19 are free to descend and guide the staple legs into the groove 76. The staple magazine consists of a channel-shaped member having sides 27 with top flanges 28, Fig. 3, and an inner bend 26 supporting a staple bar 29. The rear end of the member is pivoted to the brackets 7, and the front end has tongues 31 to engage slots in the plunger housing 32 and is shaped to define, with the housing, a driver passage, Fig. 11, which is as wide as thickest staple to be used, but less than the width of the thinnest. Hence, staples of various thicknesses can be used, and the driver 57 has a forward bevel 99 which holds the staple being driven against the housing 32, and a rearward bevel 100 which presses the remaining staples back in the magazine. The housing 32 has extensions 33 which snap over studs 34 on the arm 2 and are locked by tabs 35. The housing also has a front enlargement 58 housing a strokelimiting lug 59 on the plunger 56, and an open back closed by a removable plate 39. The latter is locked in place by tongues and grooves under the influence of the plunger spring 61, which rests on an extension 67 of the plate. A cover member 40 is held in place frictionally. A full-stroke mechanism for the driver consists of a pawl 64 pivoted to the plate 39 and a rack 62 carried by the plunger and provided with a cam bend at its upper end 63. The staplefeeding mechanism comprises a pusher 44 slidable, under the action of a spring 46, along a rod 45 which is secured to a block 47. The latter is slidable, under the action of a spring 49, along a rod 48 carried by a bracket 50. The springs telescope into recesses in the block. The bracket is part of a spring clip 52 which locks into a recess 55 in the arm 2. The rear part of the base 1 is cut away at 8, so that the base can be turned into line with the arm 2, when the device is to be used as a tacker, without dis-assembling the mechanism for operating the members 19.
