Abstract

815,658. Stapling machines. BOSTITCH Inc. Sept. 28, 1956, No. 29667/56. Class 89(3) In a stapling machine for inserting and clinching a staple S, Fig. 7, having a downwardly looped head and inwardly bowed legs, without the use of an anvil on the reverse side of the workpiece f, an anvil 60, Fig. 15, pivoted at the front of the staple driving throat, is provided with a lip 62 which sustains the downwardly looped staple head whilst the staple legs are driven in and clinched in overlapping relationship within the workpiece by a driver blade 40, Fig. 17. The blade 40 has an opening 66 which towards the end of the driving stroke moves into alignment with a cam projection 63 on the anvil 60, allowing the projection 63 to enter the opening 66 so that the anvil rocks to withdraw the lip 62 from beneath the head of the staple which is finally driven flat against the workpiece, Fig. 9. The anvil 60 is pivoted in a slot 55 in a gate 50, Fig. 14, which can be swung upwardly and outwardly, Fig. 4, to expose the throat so that it may be cleared in the event of it becoming clogged. When the gate 50 is opened the staples are prevented from escaping from the magazine 2 by a retainer 75 which may be raised against a spring to permit withdrawal of the staples or to permit the magazine to be re-loaded from the front. A spring loaded plunger 20, Fig. 11, mounted at the rear of the throat, is urged against the side of a staple being driven to frictionally prevent lateral displacement of the staple during the driving operation. The staples in the magazine are fed forwardly by a pusher 95 having a downwardly spring urged pawl 110 which engages the rearmost staple. The magazine is preferably re-loaded by inserting staples through its open rear end and then withdrawing the pusher 95 rearwardly so that the pawl 110 rides over the staples until it engages behind the rearmost staple. The rear end of the magazine is provided with a spring loaded detent (Figs. 1 and 2 not shown), which prevents any tendency for the staples to move rearwardly when the pusher 95 is withdrawn. The machine is operated by air pressure, the driver blade 40 being coupled to a piston in a cylinder which can be connected either to an air pressure supply or to exhaust by means of a trigger actuated valve in the handle, (Figs. 1 and 2 not shown). The machine may be operated manually by means of a suitable lever.
