Abstract

1286190 Stapling machines SWINGLINE Inc 1 Dec 1970 [8 June 1970] 57111/70 Heading B4C The base 12, Fig. 3, which carries the anvil 17 of a stapling machine 11 is formed integral with an upwardly-biased resilient spring member 15 which bears upon or abuts a magazine 18 which is pivoted to the base at (211), Fig. 1 (not shown). This spring member comprises an elongate spring blade having a pair of oppositely-disposed laterally-projecting portions 16, Fig. 2, extending outwardly beyond and accommodated in openings 14 in adjacent side portions of the base. The magazine has downwardlydepending side portions 19, Fig. 2, which overlie side portions of the base and bear against the laterally-projecting portions of the spring member. The magazine includes a cover 29, Fig. 3, which carries a spring support 38 to retain one end 39 of a coil spring 32 which in turn is connected at its opposite end 41 to actuate a follower 43. A driver arm 48 is mounted above the magazine cover 29 and a top cap 49 is secured to the driver arm. The driver arm 48 has a rear portion 55 which retains in position a latch-button 28 used for opening the device so that staples may be inserted into the magazine. Stapling pressure is applied to the cap 49 causing a driver blade 35 to move within an opening (52), Fig. 8 (not shown). The spring 15 acts as a clearance spring maintaining a spaced relationship between the magazine and the base, and facilitating insertion of the work. The base is pivotally moved away from the magazine when the device is to be used as a tacker.
