Abstract
494,122. Stapling. READER, C. R., and SUTTON, J. R. June 16, 1937, No. 16674. [Class 89 (iii)] A stapling tool of the hammer type comprises a hollow handle 24 housing a staple magazine 23, and a tubular head 1. The latter is closed at its upper end by a screw plug 2 having a depending sleeve 3 with a bevelled lower end 16. Slidable in the head upon the sleeve 3 is a plunger 4 having a closed lower end 5 acting as a striker and a bevelled upper end 17, the plunger being urged downwardly by a spring 8. Slidable within the sleeve 3 is a piston 10 which is urged downwardly by a spring 12 and carries a driver 19 and spring pins 13. When the plunger is struck upon the article to be stapled, it rises into the head 1, carrying with it the piston 10 until the cam surface 17 forces the pins 13 into the body of the piston. At this point, the piston is released from the plunger and descends, so that the driver cuts off and drives a staple through the guide passage 20. In a modification, Fig. 3, movement of the plunger 34 is transmitted to the driver 37 by rollers 33. In another modification, the striker is a yoke slidable on the head and having a cross pin engaging the rollers. For driving ladder-type staples, the driver has ribs adapted to engage the connecting bars of the staples.
