Abstract

590,099. Combustion chambers of oil engines. LENORMAND, G. E. April 11, 1945, No. 9064. Convention date, Nov. 15, 1943. [Class 7 (iii)] An oil engine has a combustion chamber formed wholly or in part in the piston, the piston cavity 7 being covered by a disc 13 which is formed with a small orifice 9 adjacent the injector 2 and serving almost wholly to admit fuel to the cavity, and one or more larger orifices 10 through which air enters the cavity on the compression stroke. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also a modification Fig. 1 (Cancelled) wherein a lenticular cavity 7 is formed partly in a cup shaped member 4 secured to the piston by a nut 5 and partly in a cap 8 which is provided with an opening 9 through which fuel is delivered by an injector . 2 and one or more openings 10 through which air enters the cavity. The chamber may be formed by casting and then machining carried out through an opening in the piston head which is subsequently closed by a plug. In a modification the chamber may be spherical and formed in a separate member screwed into the piston and the openings 9, 10 and the fuel injector may be parallel to or inclined to the piston axis. In another modification the chamber 7, Fig. 9 (Cancelled), may be hemispherical with a central air inlet 10 and the fuel injector 2 arranged in the side of the cylinder. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
