Abstract

570,292. Engines using solid fuel. KRYGSMAN, D. Dec. 24, 1943, No. 21674. [Class 7 (ii)] In an opposed piston engine, finely divided solid fuel is injected at or about the commencement of the compression stroke. Fuel delivered to a passage 17 in the cylinder wall when the piston 12 is at or near the beginning of its compression stroke, traverses a radial passage 16 in the piston head and issues from an axial orifice in a semi - spherical hollow 13 in the piston head. The hollow 13 is bounded by a rim 14 adapted to telescope into a rim 15 surrounding a similar hollow 13 in the other piston 11 when the pistons approach their innermost positions, the hollows forming a spherical combustion chamber which persists over about 30 degrees of crank movement as one piston is given a corresponding lead over the other. In each piston, a space 20 between adjacent piston rings may be fed with compressed air delivered through pipes 23, 22 when the fuel injection occurs, or be connected by internal passages to the space between the pistons to avoid seepage of the fuel between the piston and cylinder wall. Lubricant may be supplied with the compressed air. The fuel may be injected through a porcelain nozzle member fitted in the hemispherical recess 13.
