Abstract
586,275. Velocity - modulated tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and TOMLIN, S. G. Dec. 4, 1942, No. 17310. [Class 39 (i)] A velocity-modulated tube has a cylindrical resonator 1 excited by an electron beam passing across two gaps 7 formed between plates 6 and fins 5, and tuning is effected by moving a vane 10 in the vicinity of one or both of the gaps. In the form shown, the vanes 10 are joined by a cross-bar 9, Fig. 1, secured to a plug 3 rotating in the end of the resonator. A quarter-wave slot 14 prevents escape of energy past the plug. The plug may be moved by a torsion tube sealed to the envelope, as described in Specification 561,710. Specifications 537,490 and 581,481 also are referred to.
