Abstract
537,518. Velocity-modulated tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and FREMLIN, J. H. Dec. 22, 1939, No. 32814. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVI] A resonator of the hollow type for use with electrondischarge devices, employing velocity modulation, such as that described in Specification 537,490, is corrected for changes in capacity produced by changes in temperature. Fig. 1 shows such a resonator A in which an electron beam is velocity modulated in the space between the pairs of plates E and D and returns energy to the resonator in the space between the plates C and D. To correct the capacity for changes of temperature the plates C are made of material of low coefficient of expansion and are carried by fins L projecting from the body of the radiator and attached to the plate C at their outer ends. In a modification two other resonators are provided, made of material of low co-efficient of expansion and having periods slightly above and below that of the resonator A. When the period of the resonator A becomes equal to that of one of the auxiliary resonators through changes in temperature the oscillations produced in that resonator are rectified, amplified and employed to correct the capacity of the resonator A. This may be done by moving the plates C, either by means of bimetallic strips heated by the current, by magnetic coils, or by piezo-electric crystals.
