Abstract
582,171. Yelocity-modulated tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and ROACH, R. G. May 8, 1942, No. 6279. [Class 39 (i)] In a velocity modulated oscillation generator, a variable-mu grid is interposed in the path of the electron beam so that the dimension of the beam perpendicular to the electric vector of the electric field in the resonator can be shortened as the frequency increases ; the beam current is correspondingly reduced. As shown in Fig. 1, the oscillator may be of the type in which the beam from an elongated cathode 5 passes through a tuned coaxial line 3, 4 to the collector 6. The grid 7 may be uniformly slotted and bent, as shown, or flat or bent with tapered slot, or inclined, or a wound grid of any similar properties. The widest or most permeable part of the grid is opposite an antinode ; if the resonator system is symmetrical, this part is in the middle of the grid, but it may be at one end, so that grid and cathode may be reduced to half of the symmetrical case. If the antinode moves with frequency variation, the best position of the grid is fixed at the highest frequency to be used. Specification 537,490 is referred to.
