Abstract

597,511. Velocity-modulated tubes. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. June 21, 1944, No. 11839. Convention date, June 23, 1943. [Class 39 (i)] A velocity-modulation oscillator is arranged to inhibit oscillation in the gravest mode or a plurality of the gravest modes, only oscillations of higher order being produced. This is effected by adjustment of the impelling force applied to the electron stream and thus of the transit time or alternatively by design of a feed-back between two resonators to pass freely only the oscillations of higher order. The device shown in Fig. 1 comprises an evacuated container 12 enclosing an electron gun 13, apertured conducting discs 15, 16 separated by gaps 18, 19 from drift tube 17, and a cup-shaped collector 14 of graphite or other material. The container is surrounded by a two-part shell 20 divided along a diametral plane passing through the axis of the container and constituting with the discs 15, 16 a cavity resonator. Polarizing voltages are applied to the electrodes, the discs 15, 16 and the drift tube 'from a source 25 through potentiometers 26, 27. The shell 20 is of magnetic material, magnetized to provide a positive pole at the centre part-adjacent the disc 15 and a negative pole at the centre part adjacent the disc 16, focusing of the electron beam being thereby effected. External magnetic shunts consisting of U-shaped strips 34, 35 of soft iron may be adjusted in position to vary the field. The shell is provided with an internal coating of copper or copper overplated with silver to reduce hysteresis. Tuning is'effected by a plug or plugs 32. Energy is withdrawn by a co-axial line 49. The device shown in Fig. 2 comprises toroidal resonators 36, 37 connected by a wave-guide 45 designed to feed 'back only the higher mode oscillations the guide being provided with apertures 43, 44 of predetermined size or with irises. Tuning plugs 41, 42 are provided for each resonator. Instead of a wave-guide a co-axial line may be used as feed-:back. In modifications the two resonators are constituted by a single shell divided by a thick walled conducting disc which supports thd drift tube, the disc being provided with apertures or irises designed to feed back only the higher mode oscillations.
