Abstract

587,619. Velocity-modulated tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and TOMLIN, S. G. Jan. 21, 1944, No. 1229. [Class 39 (i)] In an electron discharge device of the type described in Specification 537,490, in which an electron beam is projected across a coaxial line resonator, the resonator parts are so dimensioned and in particular the gap-length G, Fig. 1, between the fins 2, 3 and the fins 4 attached to the central conductor 5 is so chosen that the proportional frequency change produced by a given variation in the mean accelerating voltage is a maximum. The device may thus be tuned by varying the accelerating voltage. The necessary relations between the various resonator parts are discussed mathematically. Magnetic focusing is used. The resonator 1 is preferably secured to an annular metal disc 6 sealed through the glass envelope 7 to assist in the dissipation of heat, as described in Specification 587,664. The resonator may be open at the upper end as shown, in which case the generated waves are radiated directly therefrom. The diameter of the open end is preferably less than the cut-off diameter at the operating frequency. Alternatively, the upper end of the resonator may be closed, and energy extracted by means of a wire loop and probe from the closed end, Fig. 3 (not shown). The lower end of the resonator may be left open in this case if the diameter of the resonator is below the cut-off diameter.
