Abstract

588,371. Velocity-modulated tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and TOMLIN, S. G. Sept. 1, 1944, No. 16725. [Class 39 (i)] A hollow resonator in a velocity-modulated device consists of a section of screened pair transmission line comprising a tubular conductor 3 and two metal rods 6 and 7, with diametrically aligned slots through which a blade-like electron beam passes. Metal fins 11, 12, 13, 14 are provided to define the gaps between the conductors. The resonator is supported from a copper annulus 2 sealed through the glass envelope 1 and is closed at the lower end by a disc which supports the rods 6 and 7. The rods 6, 7 extend beyond the open end of the resonator where they are united in a loop 8. Alternatively, the loop may be replaced by an antenna system. The electron beam is generated by an electron gun 18, 19, 20 'described in Specification 588,370 and collected by a plate 21. The resonator may include more than two inner conductors and the coaxial-line resonator of Specification 537,490 is referred to. The disc 2 may form the wall of a wave-guide or external resonator. The device may oscillate as a quarter-wave or as a half-wave resonator.
