499,291. Optical projection apparatus. ANCIENS ETABLISSEMENTS BARBIER, BENARD, & TURENNE. Nov. 29, 1937, Nos. 21121/38 and 21122/38. Convention dates, Nov. 30, 1936 and July 28, 1937. Divided application. [Class 97 (i)] The illuminant of a projection microscope comprises a high pressure gas discharge lamp, such as a mercury vapour lamp forming a brilliant linear source, and an optical system producing a small image of the source on the object to be projected. As shown, light from the lamp 9 passes a condenser 13, mirror 7, and water tank 14 to impinge on a condenser 15 containing an amamorphoser lens to produce a small image 9<11>. Mirror elements 12, 12<1> formed as surfaces of revolution about the optical axis 20 ensure that lateral rays from the source 9 are not lost. In a modification, the mirrors 12, 12<1> and 7 may be omitted, and the source 9 and condenser 13 placed directly beneath the tank 14 when one of the lens elements 13 is arranged to be substantially rectilinear in section in planes perpendicular to the source, and to be curved in the plane containing the source and the optical axis.
