[Class 97 (i)] A film gate 3 is disposed at or adjacent one focus f<2> of an ellipsoidal reflector 1, and one or more linear light sources 2 are arranged at or near the other focus f<1> and either in the axis of - revolution of the ellipsoid or parallel thereto at a minimum distance therefrom. The light sources may be liquidcooled high pressure mercury vapour discharge tubes having contracted discharge paths, so mounted as to be movable longitudinally of the reflector. For this purpose they may be interchangeably mounted on a reflecting cover closing an aperture in the rear wall of the reflector.
