476,734. Optical systems. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. May 6, 1936, No. 12795. Convention date, July 27, 1935. [Class 97 (i)] A system for uniformly illuminating a circular condenser by a linear source such as a superpressure metal vapour discharge tube comprises one or more cylindrical reflecting surfaces arranged parallel with the longitudinal axis of the source so that the shortest distance from the source to the surface or surfaces is less than the radius of curvature thereof whereby the images of the source lie near it. As shown, the reflector 5 comprises two cylindrical surfaces, the centres of curvature M<1>, M" of which lie beyond the source L so that the images B<1>H, B"H are adjacent the source. As shown in Fig. 4, auxiliary spherical mirrors D having a common centre M<111 >reflect light back to the mirror S which would otherwise be lost. The mirrors may be slightly curved longitudinally and auxiliary refracting elements may be arranged between the source and the condenser. A mercury vapour tube may be employed and a single cylindrical mirror may be used.
