Abstract
386,281. Microscopes. ZEISS, C., [Firm of], Carl-Zeiss-Strasse, Jena, Germany. Sept. 19, 1932, No. 25971. Convention date, Sept. 28, 1931. [Class 97 (i).] Apparatus for light-field and/or dark-field illumination of microscopic objects in incident light comprises a transparent reflector 7. for the light-field illumination and an annular reflector 6 in conjunction with an annular condenser 14 for the darkfield illumination, the reflectors 6, 7 being rigidly connected and having in front of them a diaphragm for determining the cross section of the incident rays. The reflectors are mounted in a housing 1 screwed to the microscope tube 5 and having a support 10 for the objective 11. A tube 12 screwed to the housing 1 carries the condenser 14 which surrounds the objective and has a paraboloidal reflecting surface 13. The partial reflector 7 is cemented to the annular reflector 6 and the reflecting surfaces are inclined at 45‹ to the axis of the microscope. The housing 1 has a light entrance aperture 2 in which a lens 15 is mounted, and behind this lens is a slot 16 to carry the appropriate diaphragm. In dark-field illumination only, the diaphragm used has an opaque central part surrounded by a transparent annulus, while the diaphragm for light-field illumination transmits light only over a small circular area at the centre of the lens. For light- and dark-field illumination together, no diaphragm is used. For use as an alternative to the reflector 7 for the lightfield illumination, a trapezoidal reflecting prism 26 may be provided, this prism being mounted on a rod 25 which can be inserted through the side of the housing. The diaphragm for use with this prism has a small central rectangular aperture corresponding to the entrance face of the prism, the remainder being opaque.
