Abstract
The channel-flaps and channel-base of shoe soles are treated with a solution of polymerized chloroprene in an organic solvent, and secured by pressure for instance in a machine described in Specification 339,739, [Class 17 (i)]. The operation may be effected with the leather in temper. Preferably the polymerized chloroprene is freed from malodorant for instance as described in Specification 468,435, [Group IV]. A suitable adhesive solution comprises deodorized chloroprene polymer, wood rosin, magnesia, zinc oxide, sulphur, phenyl-b -naphthylamine, tetramethyl-thiuram monosulphide, benzene, and trichlorethylene; the ingredients (except sulphur and solvents) may be milled together and then dissolved with the sulphur in the solvent mixture. Preferably the tetramethyl - thiuram monosulphide is added to the composition not long before use. Alternatively the adhesive may consist of the polymer and solvent alone. Instead of the wood rosin there may be used gum rosin, cumar resin (a synthetic resin of the para-coumarone para-indene type) or other natural or synthetic resin. The magnesium and zinc oxides may be omitted or replaced by equivalent material. The phenyl-b -naphthylamine may be omitted, and the tetramethyl-thiuram monosulphide may be omitted or replaced by another accelerator. Other solvents may be employed such as carbon tetrachloride, toluene or xylene. Preferably the tetramethyl thiuram monosulphide is added to the composition not long before use. Alternatively the adhesive may consist of the polymer and solvent alone. Instead of the wood rosin there may be used gum rosin, cumar resin (a synthetic resin of the paracoumarone-para-indene type) or other natural or synthetic resin. The magnesium and zinc oxides may be omitted or replaced by equivalent materials. The phenyl-b -naphthylamine may be omitted, and the tetramethylthiuram monosulphide may be omitted or replaced by another accelerator. Other solvents may be used such as carbon tetrachloride, toluene or xylene. Specifications 387,325, [Group IV], and 387,363 also are referred to.
