Abstract

An adhesive consists of creamed latex in admixture with an aqueous emulsion of a softener. Softeners include rosin oil, pine tar, white pine pitch or cumar. An emulsion of a water insoluble volatile organic liquid such as carbon tetrachloride benzol, high flash coal tar, naphtha or solvent naphtha may also be added. A deodorizer such as oil of wintergreen, terpineol, anisic aldehyde, phenyl ethyl alcohol, methyl salicylate or oil of lavender, and vulcanizing agents and/or fillers may also be added. The latex may be acid alkaline or neutral and, if desired, creamed more than once, with, e.g. pectin, karaya gum, alginates, Irish moss, Iceland moss. In an example the proportions are creamed latex 100 (as rubber), rosin oil emulsion 20 to 40, carbon tetrachloride emulsion 30 to 200, and optionally oil of wintergreen 2 to 5, whiting 50 to 100.
