515,334. Gutta percha and balata compositions. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., TWISS, D. F., and HALE, R. W. June 20, 1938, No. 18198. [Class 70] [Also in Group III] Non-adhesive compositions consisting substantially of deresinated gutta percha and/or balata and a minor proportion of rubber are made by forming a solution of the gutta percha and/or balata in a volatile organic solvent such as benzene and forming an emulsion by mixing into the solution an aqueous. dispersion of rubber. The mixing may be facilitated by the addition of a neutral organic liquid soluble in the solvent and miscible with water, e.g. alcohol, of acetic acid, glue, gelatine, or a soap, which may be formed from oleic acid present in the solution and an alkali such as ammonia in the dispersion. The dispersion, which may be natural latex or an emulsion of synthetic rubber such as polymerized butadiene or chlorobutadiene, may contain vulcanizing ingredients and may be vulcanized before or after mixing with the solution, the gutta percha remaining substantially unvulcanized. The composition may be applied as a coating, e.g. by spreading before evaporation of water and solvent, or may be dried and subsequently moulded under pressure. Belting, insulation, and play balls may be produced.
