Abstract

240,939. Wood, E. July 16, 1924. Buoyant compounds.-A composition suitable for the manufacture of life belts, buoys &c. comprises the following ingredients, preferably in the proportions stated, viz. : 20 oz. of carbon bisulphite, 10 oz. of shellac, 6 oz. of balata. 20 oz. of methylated spirit, 10 oz. of calcined magnesite, 12 oz. of dextrine, 10 oz. of cable strip or waste rubber, 30 oz. of sulphuric acid, 6 oz. of paper pulp, 4 oz. of mica, 8 oz. of gutta percha, 6 oz. of cedar gum, and sufficient fibre, cork &c. to make a paste-about 30 oz. The gutta and balata are dissolved separately in the carbon bisulphide and added to the other ingredients. After mixing, the composition is dried, pulverized, and moulded hot.
