Abstract

A polymeric composition comprises (i) at least 80% of a low pressure polyethylene and (ii) 5%-20% of an elastomeric substance with a gel content of at least 50%. The gel content is related to the cross-linking present in the rubber-like substance and is equivalent to the proportion of the substance insoluble in solvents for the non-cross-linked portion of the polymer. The rubber-like substance may be natural rubber or a synthetic rubber such as polybutadiene or polyisoprene or butadiene-styrene or butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers in which the required gel content has been produced e.g. by chemically cross-linking with divinyl benzene or by curing e.g. with sulphur, tetramethyl thiuram sulphide, a dithiocarbamate, an aromatic thiazole, guanidine or an aldehyde amine. The polyethylene may be produced by any low-pressure process and a list of possible catalysts is given e.g. Ziegler catalysts or supported oxides of metals of subgroup V(a) and VI(a) or Group VIII.
