Abstract

456,813. Bicycle &c. lamps. JARVIS, L. J., 2, Riley Road, Brighton. April 6, 1936, No. 10092. [Classes 39 (ii) and 75 (iv)] A bicycle or like vehicle lamp comprises a casing 1 accommodating a reflector 5 for projecting a white beam forwardly and having a rearwardly extending part 7 supporting a red transparency or glass 8 which is extended laterally and rearwardly to produce a wide spread of red coloured light. The casing 1 may be in the form of substantially half an ellipsoid, the rear part 7 being formed with a slot 9 to receive the transparency 8 and having its inner surface coloured white, silvered, or otherwise made reflecting. The reflector 5 may be formed with a central aperture 17 to allow light from a single bulb 3 within the reflector to pass rearwardly to illuminate the transparency 8, and the aperture 17 may be in the form of a narrow horizontal slot or fitted with a small lens to spread the light laterally. The transparency 8 may be made of flexible sheet material such as non- inflammable celluloid, it may be received in ledges 11 formed on the horizontal edges of the slot 9, and its ends may engage under narrow vertical plates 12 fixed across the ends of the slot 9. A pair of bowed resilient fingers are secured to the outside of the casing 1 and their rearwardly directed limbs receive small screws which pass inwardly through the ends of the strip 8 and are engaged by nuts 14. The casing 1 is connected by a truncated conical pillar 21 to a casing 20 containing an electric battery 24. The casing is preferably of rectilinear box-like form, but it may be of cylindrical form with a vertical or horizontal axis. The bulb holder 4 may be rigidly secured in position or it may be gripped between the limbs of a bifurcated clip 23, and it is connected to the battery 24 by means of a contact strip 18 which extends through an insulating strip 27 and is formed at its lower end into a spring finger 19, the circuit being controlled by means of a switch 22. According to the Provisional Specification the edges of the transparency 8 may be bound by a frame of flexible material, such as a narrow channel section strip of thin sheet metal, and the back of the casing 1 may merge into a substantially half cylindrical part having a vertical axis aligned with that of a depending tubular casing containing the battery.
