Abstract
561,638. Vehicle rear lamps. HINDS, R. P. H. Jan. 28, 1943, No. 1469. [Class 75 (iv)] A vehicle rear lamp shown in Fig. 1 comprises a moulded plastic back plate 1 having a forwardly projecting flange 2, Fig. 4, in which a lens globe 3 is sprung and a moulded plastic front plate 10 secured by screws 15 to the back plate and formed with curved ribs 12 acting as bump protectors for the globe 3 and with hoods or shades 13 fitting over upper portions of the sides of the globe 3. A partition 5 extending forwardly from the back plate inside the globe 3 carries sockets for two lamp bulbs 6, 7. The globe 3 is of clear glass at its ends and is coloured red between the ribs 12. The circuit of the bulb 6 can be closed by a switch near the driver's seat to give a downwardly directed light when reversing. The bulb 7 has two filaments f<4>, f<5>, the circuit to the filament f<4>being closable by the driver to give a rearwardly directed red light between the ribs 12 and a laterally directed white light through the end of the globe to illuminate the vehicle number plate and the circuit to the filament f being closed by a switch operated when applying the brakes to render the rearwardly directed red light brighter. In another construction shown in Fig. 5, the front plate 16 is formed with forwardly projecting ribs 17 fitting over a vertically arranged globe 19 mounted in a flanged rectangular recess in the back. member. A partition 5 projecting forwardly from the back plate carries lamp holders supporting the bulbs 6, 7. The upper part of the globe is of clear glass for the reversing light from the bulb 6. The lower part of the globe is of red glass except for a portion at the lower end and side where white light is emitted for illuminating the number plate.
