[Class 135.] A water seal safety apparatus for acetylene generators comprises a float i connected to a gas inlet valve f located in the water space of a vessel a and to gas outlet valves m, m<1> in the gas space of the vessel and a rotatable gas distributer g. The gas ducts of the distributer are brought into and out of alignment with gas ducts leading from the inlet valve f when the distributer is raised by the float, the buoyancy of the float compensating for the dead weight attached to it to such an extent that the presence of acetylene gas from an inlet d raises the float and the pressure due to back-firing on a plate l depresses it again. In the raised position of the float, all the valves being open, gas passes from the inlet d by way of gas ducts x in segmental projections on a casing b secured to the vessel a and ducts in the wings of the distributer, through the water and gas spaces and thence through apertures n in a sleeve depending from the top of the vessel a past the valves m, m<1> to the outlet k. The wings of the distributer comprise two pairs of unequal length and their gas ducts open into the water space tangentially and at different distances from the centre of rotation so that the distributer functions as a Barker's Mill. This ensures an even distribution of gas in the water space. When the float sinks, water is propelled up between the casing b and the distributer g into the gas ducts of the latter bv vanes v. The valve m comprises an inwardly disposed flange on a sleeve carried by a plate l rigidly connected to the float, the flange engaging a collar y on the outlet pipe k. The closure m<1> consists of three intermeshing flanges, one depending from the collar y and the other two formed on the plate l. These flanges have circumferential ribs which effect a closure when the float sinks. The valve f may be conical or hemispherical.
