Abstract
514,756. Jet propulsion apparatus. GOODYEAR, J. W. June 1, 1938, No. 16342. [Class 114] . Jet propulsion apparatus for ships which includes a pump discharging water along alternate paths through an outlet duct, is also - provided with a pivoted, vane in the outlet passage to control the cross-sectional area without diverting.any of the water along the alternative path. The pump delivering water through the volute passage 10 to the outlet 11 in the plating 12 of the ship has its discharge controlled by a vane 17 pivoted at 18 and with inner surfaces 19, 20 which conform to the shane,of the outlet surface. The vane 17 is adjustable to vary the cross-sectional area and the discharge from the pump. In addition there is provided a curved vane 14 pivoted at 16 which provides for directing the flow, to provide a reversal of the ship's motion. As the vane 14 blocks off one path, the part of the vane 17 behind it is inoperative. The vane may float freely or be controlled positively and it may have at its ends freely pivoted extensions which under fluid action set the vane into position. Specification 503,792 is referred to.
