Hydraulic jet propulsion apparatus comprises a syphon-like passage in the hull made up of a central part B of circular cross-section, and containing an axial flow pump C, a forwardly inclined inlet section B<SP>1</SP>, and a discharge section B<SP>3</SP>, the outlet end of which is of flattened rectangular form. A reversing device E<SP>2</SP> can be moved outward into the path of the jet when desired.
