Abstract
333,996. Blakeborough, R. A., and Klouman, F. A. June 22, 1929. Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves.- Relates to plunger valves of the type in which a plunger b works in a cylindrical valve body a<2> providing an annular waterway, movements of the plunger b being effected by varying the pressure inside the chamber c by means of a pilot valve d which controls an orifice b<1> in the nose of the plunger b. In order to permit of priming the downstream pipe line or a turbine casing, the valve is provided with an external by-pass m controlled by a valve k connecting the upstream pipe line with the chamber c and having an area smaller than that of the orifice b, which, in combination with a secondary bye-pass m' controlled by a valve k<1> affords a greater area of passage-way than the orifice b<1>. When the valve k is open and the valve k<1> closed, the piston valve b follows the movements of the pilot valve d. If, on the other hand, the valves k and k<1> are both opened, fluid enters the chamber c faster than it escapes through the orifice b<1> and hence the opening of the pilot valve d is not followed by the piston valve b, which remains closed, thus priming the downstream pipe line. The bye-pass m<1> may be separate from the bye-pass m and connected by separate pipes and passages to the main valve casing.
