Valves actuated by vessels receiving and discharging liquids.-Relates to a rotary plug valve for steam conduits of the kind supported by coaxial trunnions 13 in ball or roller bearings 14, and having slightly-spaced closure surfaces so as to obtain a rapid, though incomplete, closing of the conduit, the casing and plug passages 10, 15 forming together a Venturi passage. In this valve arrangement the pressure difference at two points 31, 35 of the Venturi passage is utilized for closing the valve rapidly in case of pipe fracture. For this purpose the point 31 at the large cross-section is connected by a pipe 30 to a vessel 27 containing mercury &c., and the point 35 at the throat of the passage, is connected to a vessel 28 suspended on a lever 29 and counterweighted at 39. In the event of excess fluid flow, caused, for example, by pipe fracture, the consequent reduction of pressure in the vessel 28 allows mercury to pass from vessel 27 to vessel 28, which consequently falls. This action, through the lever 29 and cord 41, withdraws a catch bolt 23 and releases a weighted arm 25 secured to the spindle of the valve, which is thereupon closed, the closed position being located by a stop 26 on the valve casing.
