Abstract

251,121. Rushen, P. C., (Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nurnberg, Akt.-Ges.). May 28, 1925. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-In an engine of the solid fuel injection type, the air suction valve or the cylinder cover is provided with a device serving to definitely direct a current of cool air or gas on to the fuel injector to prevent the accumulation of carbon deposits thereon. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the head of an inlet valve g of the poppet type situated adjacent the injector a carries a flat shield h normal to the valve axis, disposed so that the entering air is directed over the injector. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the injector a is surrounded by a sheet-metal casing j forming therewith an annular slot k adjacent the delivery orifices of the injector. The casing j is in communication with a valve n, through which in the case of a four-stroke cycle engine atmospheric air is sucked, and in the case of a two-stroke cycle engine scavenging air or other gas under pressure is supplied. Alternatively, the valve n may admit blasts of air under high pressure drawn from the same source as the starting air, at longer intervals than once every cycle. In a modified construction, the valve n is omitted, and the casing j extended radially in such a manner that air whirling within the cylinder will enter the casing j through an opening provided near the periphery of the cylinder, and be discharged through the annular slot k.
