Framework.-A plate member for a built-up beam or spar exposed to the force of flexion, is constructed to diminish in thickness from the point of support. Fig. 1, shows a wing spar plate a having near its longitudinal edges on its under surface two ribs b to which the webs of the spar are attached. The plates and ribs may be originally made of uniform thickness and subsequently reduced towards the free end of the spar by planing or sawing. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the plate c is lightened by forming it with cells running along its length. The plate may be formed of two parts, d, e, Fig. 4, having projecting webs g, which when the parts are fixed together form longitudinal cells. In all the constructions additional strengthening ribs may be provided on the beams between the ribs b.
