Abstract

177,250. Duncan, B. A. Dec. 22, 1920. Planes and the like, construction of; steering, balancing, and regulating altitude.-In a control surface, a spar is composed of lengths of tube having circular end flanges which abut on and are riveted to the sides of a rib or other radial lever. An operating lever may be secured with a rib between and to the same pair of flanges. Fig. 2 shows the web 13 of a rib secured between flanges 10 of a tubular spar 9. Heel-arms 16, having bearings 19, and hinging on a pin 20 secured to a main spar 22 of the aircraft, are also intserposed between the flanges 10. If the rib has a box web, the flanges 10 are connected by rivets passing through one flange and one side of the box web. As shown in Fig. 4, a web 14, an operating lever 23, and a tie 24 are formed of sheet metal bent along the edge 25 and riveted to make a hollow lever and a box web, the web being fitted with tubular booms 27 at each corner.. A lever may be formed on each side of the control surface. Short lengths of the tube comprising the spar facilitate grading according to load-- ing.
