Abstract

202,761. North, J. D. June 2, 1922. Struts.-A built-up metal spar comprising upper and lower strips A1, A2 and side strips C, is strengthened by the insertion between the joints of the upper and lower strips and the side strips, of two sheet-metal webs B1, B2, having rectangular perforations the edges of which are flanged. The webs B1, B2 extend throughout the length of the spar, the rectangular apertures in the webs leaving two longitudinal edges united by flanged tie-pieces as shown in Fig. 2. The spar is held together by rivets which pass through the flat strips and the adjacent flanges of the walls of the spar. Alternative methods of jointing are shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
