Abstract

215,130. Leitner, H. Feb. 16, 1923. Screw propellers.-Hollow metal screw propeller blades are stiffened by channel strips extending longitudinally of the blades. Each blade is built up of laminations a, b, c, Fig. 1, formed with a circular stem d, and is stiffened by two channel members, the flanges of which are in contact with the inner surfaces of the blade and are riveted thereto by rivets j, or are welded or otherwise secured thereto. The webs of the channels are flat for the major part of the length, but change to circular form at the stem. The channels are stepped at positions corresponding to the edges of the laminations b, c. In the modification, Fig. 18, the lamina b is extended at l and its edges m turned in to form the channel stiffener. The lamina c is similarly extended at n and fits in the extension l. In addition, the edges of the laminµ b, c may be flanged over as at p. When the blade is made from single sheets of tapered thickness, a separate channel stiffener is used in place of the extensions l, n. Supplementary stiffeners set across the blades may also be provided.
