Abstract

125,748. Mooney, D. J. April 24, 1918. Framework.-Spars, longerons, &c. for aircraft are formed from thin metal strips having their edges bent over flat, the doubled edge being then formed into flanges of various shapes. The strips may be wired at the end or left slightly bulb shaped. Fig. 8 shows two channel members a with thickened flanges b connected together at intervals by vertical members j, or they may have their webs directly secured together. Fig. 14 shows another form in which the webs of two members a are bent towards one another and riveted together, the flanges being strengthened by vertical posts h. A similar girder with the flanges turned inwards is described. In another modification, two channel members are united by two longitudinally corrugated strips bent over the flanges, and the webs of the members are secured to wood spacing-blocks. Flanged openings or series of holes in triangulated groups may be punched in the webs. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 126,391.
