Abstract
128,262. Cowtan, D. M., and Piccolomini, H. C. P. July 5, 1917. Planes, construction of; framework.-Girders, struts, spars, ribs, &c. for aircraft and other purposes are composed of triangular, rectangular, circular, or other shaped metal stampings formed with a flange or wall at one side and secured between longitudinal members, which may also be flanged along one or both sides or connected by a side wall or web, which may be interrupted at intervals, or may be pierced or of lattice formation. Fig. 7 shows triangular elements a flanged at b and arranged between longitudinal channels k and at opposite sides of a rectangular element formed of two stampings as shown in Fig. 3 placed back to back and encircled by a band g. Various arrangements of the triangular or other elements are described. Transverse plates l, Fig. 13, may be interposed between the elements a. In the case of a tapering girder, such as a wing rib, the elements are of varying size, as shown in Fig. 16. The spars may be connected to the ribs by gusset plates.
