Abstract

480,273. Aeroplane structural elements. A.T.S. CO., Ltd., and NORTH, J. D. Aug. 20, 1936, No. 22966. [Class 4] Aeroplane spars and like members comprising longitudinally extending booms and transversely corrugated webs which are directly secured to one surface only of the boom through those surfaces of the web corrugations which lie in contact with that surface of the boom, have the webs stiffened to resist shear by one or more stiff members secured to them across the corrugations and along lines extending between and in the same general direction as the booms. As shown, a web A which may be of any of the forms shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, is secured to flat side faces F of booms B, C by rivets, screws or spot welds J, Fig. 2, and is stiffened by Z-section members D, E arranged parallel to booms B, C, respectively. In a tapering spar one of the stiffeners will be interrupted at the point where it approaches the other. The web material may be high tensile aluminium alloy, the depth d of the web corrugations not exceeding twenty times the thickness of the web metal. The depth of the stiffeners normal to the web is at least twice the depth of the web corrugations. Dimensions are given in the Provisional Specification.
