Abstract
459,793. Aircraft wing structures. MAYROW, J. J., 35, Goldhurst Terrace, Finchley, London. July 11, 1935, No. 19870. [Class 4] Aircraft structural members, in particular aircraft wing spars, comprise a web formed from metal strip at the opposite edges of which are formed a series of alternate waves or corrugations tapering towards the neutral axis of the web and in most cases crossing such axis, and flanges formed from longitudinally corrugated metal strip. Fig. 1 shows a web member A having corrugations B, C formed from opposite sides of the web in reverse directions. Fig. 2 shows the web in end view and Fig. 3 shows a median section. One form of complete spar is shown in Fig. 4, in which longitudinally corrugated flange members D, E, F, G, are secured to the crests of the waves of the corrugations B, C. Alternative forms of flange members are described which are similarly built up from two or more corrugated strips to have a closed cross-section. One side of the channels may be constituted by the outer covering of the wing or body. Fig. 10 shows a section of a spar comprising duplex web and flange members. In a modification two single corrugated strips of generally U-shaped cross section constitute the flange. The spars formed as described above may be reinforced by side plates such as J, Fig. 19, and by stabilizing channels L, M. Side plates J may be laminated so as to give graduated reinforcement from the spar root outwardly. Spar attachment plates, K, Fig. 16, and flange reinforcing plates I may be fitted at the spar root. Fig. 15 shows a section through a wing having three spars of the kind described. Specification 126,085, [Class 4], is referred to.
