Abstract

238,238. Caroni, I. Aug. 6, 1924, [Convention date]. Pontoons and pontoon rafts. - Pontoons are formed of hollow prismatic sheet metal units of two kinds, one having a central tongue 4 on each of its top and bottom edges, and the other kind having a pair of tongues on the corresponding edges, and the two kinds are arranged so that each central tongue 4 is accommodated between a pair of tongues on the adjacent unit. The tongues are stepped as at 4<11>, Fig. 3, so as to engage the horizontal faces of the adjacent element. Girders 7, 11 are secured to the upper faces of the elements by means of bolts 15 projecting from the said faces. The whole assembly is enclosed by four hard wood beams 8 passing through stirrups 9, and adjacent elements are connected by bolts 18, pivoted to one element at 19 and secured to the adjacent element by keys 22. The bolts are provided with turnbuckles 10. To obtain stability of the structure, water may be introduced through orifices in the upper faces of the elements. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a.) comprises also positioning means in the form of diagonally-crossed projections on the side of the element for engaging corresponding recesses in the side of an adjacent element. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
