A pontoon unit 11 rectangular in plan with side and end walls 12 perpendicular from the top for at least a portion of their depth has said walls made with a plurality of channels 13, 14 vertically from the top to a requisite depth, said channels in section being part of a tubular section which is complemental to channel sections on adjacent pontoon units, so as to complete a composite vertical tube, the channels containing lugs 15, 15a for supporting, positioning and interfitting with a pair of coupling members 17, 17a which can be spaced apart vertically in said composite tube and held together by a locking bolt or pin 18 applied centrally in the tube.
