Vacuum apparatus.- Apparatus for raising liquid', such as fuel for internal - combustion engines, comprises a chamber 1 connected to atmosphere by a port 6 and to a source of suction by a passage 7 and a pipe 4. A perforated tube 11 carries a valve 13 controlling the suction and atmospheric ports, and a valve 14 controlling ports 8 through which the liquid flows from the chamber 1 to a feed chamber 2. As the liquid rises in the chamber 1 during a suction period, a float 9 rises and lifts the tube and valves by engaging a stop 15 on the tube. The chamber 1 is then connected to atmosphere and the suction is cut off, and at the same time the valve 14 is raised to open the ports 8 and allow discharge of the liquid into the chamber 2. During discharge the upper face of the valve 13 is exposed to suction, so that the valve remains in the raised position until the liquid level has fallen so low that the weight of the float resting on the stop 16 overcomes the suction pull and returns the valves and tube to the position shown in the Figure.
